Firefox Madness

Context -
A Firefox package had recently been deployed (60.x). This upgraded our existing 52.x thereby causing chaos when accessing Oracle. Downgrading was imminent.

Experiencing problems accessing Oracle and or Agile through Firefox?  Well then you might have inadvertently been Upgraded.  In the event that this has happened to you do not panic, a simple solution is just a few clicks away.

Identification

  • In the Search Bar type appwiz.cpl

Windows 10                                                     Windows 7

  • Upon opening Add / Remove Programs, scroll down until you see Mozilla Firefox.  If you see any other version above 52.9 then you are at risk when accessing Oracle and or Agile.  As you can see below highlighted in green, is Firefox version 60.2.2.  This is a candidate for Downgrade.

Resolution

  • Navigate to the Application Catalog.  This can be found under your Start Menu / Microsoft System Center.

  • Upon execution, navigate to the Browsers category.  Look for Oracle Firefox as shown below.

  • Select Install and we are off to the races.  Along the way you will see a few installation related graphics.  Be patient, as the installation works in the background (this may lead you to believe nothing is happening).

  • A quick check of Add/Remove programs (appwiz.cpl) reveals we are now at the the desired 52.9 version.

FAQ

  • Q - Will this procedure remove my profile and or bookmarks?

    • A - No, this only targets the application and not user settings.

  • Q - I noticed there is a reference to New Install in the title.  I thought this was a Downgrade only?

    • A - In addition to a Downgrade, I have included parameters for a New Installation in the event Firefox is not detected.

  • - I have some systems that are off network, in a work group, not on the domain.  How would I go about deploying this?

    • A - The installation is portable.  This means that you can walk it on a USB, use PSEXEC, or whatever method you prefer.  This can be located at:\\hsv1amrepw02\tools$\Portables.

  • Q - If we need to mass deploy this to our users, how can we go about it?

    • - This can be accomplished by coordinating this task with GSI for an automated deployment.
